Black & Veatch is partnering with the Center for Combating Human Trafficking (CCHT) to help strengthen and further develop their Human Trafficking Leadership Academy (HTLA). In 2022, Black & Veatch was able to help offset costs that allowed the group to participate in outreach programs and opportunities they would otherwise have to decline due to insufficient funds. One such opportunity was the Survivor Leadership Design Summit in Washington, D.C., where CCHT Executive Director, Dr. Countryman-Roswurm, worked with other survivor-leader experts from across the nation to help strengthen the leadership capacity of those who have survived human trafficking.

The Center for Combating Human Trafficking’s mission is to empower communities to more effectively prevent and intervene in cases of abuse and exploitation, including human trafficking. The resources, capacity, and global reach of Black & Veatch’s leadership will help elevate our work, ultimately helping more survivors step into who they were created to be.

United Way
Thanks to the generosity of our professionals and the Black & Veatch Foundation, Black & Veatch recently donated over $1 million to United Way, a nonprofit that works to better communities through improved education, economic mobility and health resources. Since 1999 Black & Veatch has raised over $27 million in support of their mission.
Operation Breakthrough –
Black & Veatch, along with Operation Breakthrough, has launched the Steve Edwards Renewable Energy Lab at the Ignition Lab at Operation Breakthrough. The lab commemorates Edwards’ 44-year career at Black & Veatch and honors his contributions across global communities in the field of sustainability. The lab will promote research and practice in alternative energy as it supports a teen-led Hydroponic Container Farm.
Mary Esselman, CEO, Operation Breakthrough
It is an honor for Operation Breakthrough to be included in celebrating Steve Edwards’ legacy at Black & Veatch,” said Mary Esselman, CEO, Operation Breakthrough. “We are excited about the opportunity to carry on his commitment to sustainable energy and water infrastructure. The lab will help ignite a passion for entrepreneurship and future career interests in our students as they engage in real-world experiences and problem solving on a daily basis.”

International Justice Mission (IJM)
IJM is a global organization that protects people in poverty from human trafficking, modern-day slavery, violence and police abuse of power. One example is the story of Pachaiyammal. She was enslaved in a rock quarry in South India. IJM and local government officials rescued Pachaiyammal and 10 other families being held in slavery. Pachaiyammal received her release certificate during the rescue operation — the official documentation of her new freedom.
She is also a founding member of the Leadership Council for the Global Survivor Network (GSN), an international group of survivor leaders who desire and pursue safe communities through justice systems that protect the most vulnerable.
Ryan McDonnell, Senior Manager, Strategic Partnerships, USA
The Black & Veatch Foundation is one of the many heroes who has helped make justice for people in poverty an unstoppable force over the last 25 years, and we look forward to partnering on the journey ahead as we seek to rescue and protect more people than ever before.

Water for People
Founded in 1991, Water For People is an international, nongovernmental organization that exists to promote the development of reliable, high-quality drinking water and sanitation services, accessible to all, and sustained by strong communities, businesses, and governments. Their work is focused in 38 districts across nine countries – Bolivia, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Malawi, Peru, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. It has resulted in 4.7 million people with an intermediate or high level of water service, and provided 1.99 million people improved sanitation services using market-based sanitation approaches.
Katherine Williford, Chief Growth Officer, Water For People.
Black & Veatch’s long-time support of Water For People has helped us to reach millions of people with sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services. When sustainable access to these services exists, everything changes. Health outcomes improve, girls are more likely to stay in school, local leaders are empowered, and communities become more resilient to climate change. Thank you, Black & Veatch, for your continued partnership and dedication to improving the livelihoods of families around the world.
